In 1977, 82M cans were returned. The executive director of the Aluminium Development Council (Mr C. A. Kneipp) said: “The 100 per cent increase reflects the public’s
awareness of the intrinsic value of the used aluminium can,” Mr Kneipp said. The demand for aluminium is continually increasing and thus there is also an increase in demand for recycled metal. This has resulted in an increase in the price of used cans which are now worth 35c per kilogram. The response by the public has resulted in more than 150 can collection centres being established throughout Australia.
