Not so cheerful
PA Auckland The beautiful red glow of a big fire was admired by the immediate past president of the Master Builders’ Association, Mr D. W. Paterson, and his guest?, 1 as they sat down to dinner, at his Devonport home on Friday evening. His guests first commented on the big glow across the harbour and as the company sat down to dinner, guesses were made as to where the fire could be.
The dinner party could
not agree on its location, but, Mr Paterson admitted soon afterwards, “we all enjoyed watching it.” Nobody at the table guessed that the fire was destroying the joinery factory of D. W. Paterson, LtdJ next to the Orakei Railway Station.
Not until an hour later af. r the first, fire alert did Mr Paterson know what was burning. He said the factory and its contents were worth about $200,000.
