Boys hurt when truck hits tree

Firemen had to use “jaws of life” equipment to free one of the injured boys, who had been trapped in the crushed cab of the milk truck for more than 15 minutes. Firemen were also called to free a man who was trapped after a car struck a pole at the intersection of Garlands Road and Opawa Road about 11 p.m. on Friday. Gary Thompson, aged 28, of 215 Eastern Terrace, Beckenham, suffered severe head, chest, and leg injuries. He was still in a serious condition in the intensivecare unit at the Christchurch Flospital last evening.
