Founder of Molesworth dies at 79
PA Wellington Mr George Martin, the man who helped form New Zealand’s biggest cattle station, has died in Wellington. He was 79. Mr Martin was district Commissioner of Crown Lands in the late 1930 s when Molesworth station in Marlborough was at its lowest ebb. Sheep had eaten away most of the vegetation on the 700-square-mile run, and the lessees had abandoned it. The hi.,tory of Moleswerth, wmten by Mr L. W. McCaskill, relates the suty of Mr Martin’s long camnaign to restock the station with cattle and to get rid of the rabbits on it. He also appointed a local deer culler, Mr Bill Chisholm, as the first manager of the new cattle station. Mr Chisholm’s son-in-law now manages the station. Mr Martin later became Fields Director ol the Lands and Survey Department, ar.d county surveyor of Hutt County.
