The Mount suffers first soccer loss
Mount Wellington’s amazing run of eight successive wins ended when it suffered its first Rothmans Soccer League toss of the season in Dunedin yesterday —but only after a brave fight-back narrowly failed.
The Mount trailed Dunedin City, 2-0, soon after half-time but battled back with goals from Clive Campbell and Stewart Carruthers before Gordon McDonald scored the winning goal near the end of the, match. The loss ends a marvellous.:- winning streak for the Auckland side. However, the result -gives the closest challengers some hope of catching the Mount. Wellington Diamond United picked up another two points with a 1-0 win over Courier Rangers in Wellington on Saturday. W.D.U. was a little lucky to take both points. Dave Taylor missed a penalty for Courier and twice the ball was kicked off the W.D.U. line. Two further goals from
Johann Verweij and Kevin Mulgrew's first for the season gave Trans Tours United a good 3-1 win over Hanimex United in Auckland. Verweij has now scored nine of United’s 16 league goals — a remarkable performance for a player used basically as a midfielder. Two goals from Mark Armstrong gave Manurewa its third win of the season, and after a difficult early season struggle it is now in fifth place on goal difference, emphasising the closeness of the competition. Eastern Suburbs scored once in each half to beat Manawatu United in Auckland, making it the only Auckland side to win at the week-end. The Blockhouse Bay-New-
mans Nelson United match was postponed. Results. — W.D.U. 1 (Gary Welch penalty).. Courier Rangers 0. Half-time 1-0. Eastern Suburbs 2 (A]f Stamp penalty, Dave Sneddon), Manawatu United 0.
