Clinics to resume

Some of the most successful features of New Zealand water polo will be reintroduced to the game in New Zealand. The national board’s annual general meeting at the week-end particularly examined its development. The under-15 coaching clinics —f ive each year — will resume. The Canterbury board actually pre-empted that decision with its clinic which will start today. They will again be directed by Mr W. H. Dyson, who has been reappointed national director of coaching. Matches with Queensland and Victoria, for boys and girls, will be sought. The matter of tours brought an immediate response from the national senior team coach, Ken Mark. “You’ve got a women’s team going overseas; an under-19 team-has had two trips. What are you doing for the seniors?” As a consequence, he and Mt Dyson were appointed to bring down a five-year plan of tours and internationals for the senior team. This was in line with a spreading of the work-load. Mr Dyson will form a coaching and development committee; Messrs J. de Haan and J. Court wm oe the referees’ committee, responsible for convening referees’ meetings before each national championship. An earlv example of the sharing of the load featured on championships. The meeting split into workshops, they settled their championsliips’ dates, then gave full control of those championships over to the promoting boards. The schedule again provides for three rounds of the national men’s club championship, except that the third round at Auckland will be followed by the provincial championships.

However, these are split: the A grade will be at Auckland, the B : grade at Otorohanga. The women’s club championl ship will be of two rounds; but a provincial championship has been instituted, in Wellington at Labour week-end. Also, two rounds will be played i at each tournament where possible, and the women’s tourna- . ments will be played in two seeded sections, with proniotionl relegation matches between the ' sections. The full programme for the I 1979-80 season is:— Labour week-end: (women’s provincial, men’s club champion- ; ships (first round), Wellington. • December 27-30: Men’s club i championship (second round), > Christchurch. I January 9-12: Women’s club : championship (first round), Christchurch .
