Killing for meat
Sir, — I wish to commend the thoughts of Natalie Taylor (May 10) for her advocacy of a diet refraining from second-hand dead protein. I would also say that higher proteins are obtained from soya beans, nuts, chaese and the various vegetable protein foods which are readily available. The consumption of animal flesh is unnecessary and wasteful as the world’s population increases and farming land diminishes. There is a growing awareness of an alternative cruelty-free and more economical diet which can be more evenly distributed throughout the rich and poorer countries. Future generations will look back on the slaughter of animals for food with horror. — Yours, etc., BETTE OVERELL, Hon. secretary, British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, Wellington branch. May 11, 1979.
