Former track cyclist killed

PA Whangarei Two Auckland men, one of whom was an Olympic track cyclist in 1956, were killed by electricity when the six-metre metal mast of their small trailer yacht touched an 11,000 volt overhead cable near Waitangi at 3.45 p.m. on Wednesday. The men were Mr Trevor Robert Hamilton, aged 48, a farmer, of Waiuku, and Mr Leonid Bruce Kent, aged 50, a factory manager, of Blockhouse Bay, Auckland. Mr Kent aged 50, was a 1956 N.Z. Olympic track cycling representative. The other man killed was his brother-in-law. Mr Kent was widely

known in Auckland and N.Z. sporting circles. He was a life member of both the Auckland Amateur Cycling Centre and the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club, and was the Auckland Cycling Centre’s press officer for many years. The accident happened as one of the men and Mr Kent's teen-age son were pushing the three metre boat up a grassy verge near the Shipwreck Museum at Paihia.

Sergeant Pearce, of the Kawakawa police, said he believed one of the men and the boy were pushing the yacht when it touched the line. After the boy was thrown clear the second man came to help.
