Meeting for women's council
A meeting will be held in Christchurch on May 26 to form a Christchurch branch of the Working Women’s Council. The council, formed in 1977, aims to educate women on the principles of trade unionism and to press for the recognition of the special needs of women workers. It was responsible for drafting the 15-point Women’s Charter, which was adopted in principle by the Federation of Labour annual conference this month. Mrs S. Davies, a founder member of the council who was re-elected to the executive of the Federation of Labour, will address the Christchurch meeting. A film on women’s involvement in the trade union movement will be shown at the meeting, which will be held at the Trade Union Centre at 2 p.m.
