Road widening conflict
A different alignment of Aidwins Road widening to avoid taking any Linwood High School frontage could; mean the demolition of about 11 houses, at an extra cost <>f $200,000. on the other side of the road, according to the Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee. The road-widening designation has been in the council’s district scheme since 1972. In spite of strong views by the school’s principal and its Parent-Teacher Association, the Department of Education has not asked the council to change the designation. “We feel a shift of the main entrance would chop away most of the fears the school committee has,” said the chairman of the works end traffic committee (Cr Newton Dodge). The committee agreed that the council could help to encourage a shifting of the school’s entrance to Harrow Street to avoid any traffic conflicts caused by the road widening.
