House wins award
A national design award by the New Zealand Institute of Architects has been made to a Christchurch architect, Mr Don Donnithorne, for this house at 28 Bengal Place. The award, and one other, were announced at the opening of the annual conference of the institute at Dunedin this week. The house, which is described by Mr Donnithorne as being “a New Zealand house,” is of timber construction and built on a pole platform. Timber has
been used both externally and internally wherever possible. New Zealand materials and techniques have been used throughout. It was built by Mr Colin Thwaites for Mr and Mrs R. G. Romeril. The site is a steep one. Designing the house was a challenge, Mr Donnithorne said. In December last year the house won one of three design awards made by the Canterbury branch of the Institute of Architects.
