Cool payroll theft
PA Wellington! A man impersonating a ship’s purser walked away with a payroll of several thousand dollars in Wellington yesterday. The money, thought to be’ about $BOOO, was the week’s wages for the crew of the rail ferry Aratika. Late last evening the police, had not made any arrest. | A Railways employee handed over the money, in I a locked bag, about 3.5 p.m.J but telephoned the police (about 20 minutes later. Road blocks were set up,
i!and the 4 p.m. ferry sailing ! was delayed for 30 minutes . while witnesses due to sail I were interviewed by the . police. The man who handed over . the money, Mr Hugo Leifi, /said last evening that he had /made a “very easy” mistake. ) Mr Leifi, of Lower Hutt, /has worked as a section ofj fleer at the ferry terminal for > i three years. ij “There have been quite a ,I few new pursers employed in lithe last week or so. It is ihard to recognise each one ,'of them,” he said.
