Cup to Coney

Few would quibble with the selection of the Wellington all-rounder, Jeremy Coney, as winner of the Nugget Cup for the cricket personality of the year. The award, sponsored by Reckitt and Colman (N.Z.), Ltd, is judged by votes received from readers of the “New Zealand Cricket Player” magazine. In a close poll, Coney just edged out Richard Hadlee, winner of the award two years ago. After an absence of five years from test cricket, Coney, aged 26, returned to the test scene against Pakistan and his scores of 69 in the second test and 82 and 49 in the third test helped New Zealand to draws. He also bowled his medium-paced deliveries accurately and economically. Voting this year covered an unusually wide field, Coney, Hadlee, Lance Cairns, and Bruce Edgar all receiving a large share of the votes. There was also strong support for John Wright, Warren Lees and Geoff Howarth.

Coney was the ninth recipient of the award and joins good company. The previous winners have been Bruce Murray, Bruce Taylor, Peter Coman, Mark Burgess, Geoff Howarth, Cairns, Hadlee and Graham (“Jock”) Edwards.
