Government decisions

Sir, — I wonder upon evidence Frank Freeman (May 4) bases his astoundclaim that Mr Muldoon is a “sound, competent leader without equal in New Zealand.” One would think that even a casual look at Mr Muldoon’s record on matters such as industrial relations, foreign policy, unemployment and handling of the economy would present no such evidence, while the ever-increasing figures for migrant flows out of New Zealand speak for themselves. As to decision-mak-ing, how about the fiasco of Air New Zealand’s overseas fares and the continuing muddle regarding petrol sales and earless days. I agree that our country needs a sound leader in these troubled times, but let us not equate soundness with the ability to make aggressive noises. An unfortunate fact of life is that the recent election of Mrs Thatcher in Britain will serve to bolster our Prime Minister’s ego, as both share similar Rightwing platforms. — Yours, R. L. PLUCK.
