Maori rugby tour
Sir, — Your correspondent, R. Thomson (May 9) should realise that South Africa calls its racially selected team a “national” team. In New Zealand, our Maori team is called “Maori All Blacks.” Our national team, the “All Blacks,” is, unlike South Africa’s, sei lected entirely on merit. The integrated society does not mean every culture becomes One; it means they all work together but have provision for each culture to retain their identity and freedom of expression. If South Africa wants to select a team on colour basis they should name it “White South Africans.” But their national team must, as in New Zealand be selected on merit. — Yours, etc.,
GEOFF SIAVE. May 9, 1979.
