National Superannuation

Sir, — The president of the Association of Social Workers, Miss Gray, refers to National Superannuation as a “huge subsidy to a large sector of society, costing almost a billion dollars.” Miss Gray should know that that is the gross figure, for all super payments. When tax is deducted from all payments to the tens of thousands of over sixties, who have no other income and used to draw the means test pension, the net cost of National Superannuation, is, approximately S2BOM. Labour spokesmen have exaggerated the amount of extra payments. Anyone with extra income is paying substantially more tax on their superannuation, and after paying taxes for all years, is entitled to National Superannuation. Many waste their income and have nothing at 60, and resent anyone who has saved to enjoy a decent retirement. — Yours, C. G. MARSHALL. . May 8, 1979.
