Sales tax on vehicles to stay
PA Wellington The Government has decided against removing sales tax from motor-vehicle parts as recommended by the 1977 Commission of Inquiry into the distribution of motor-ve-hicle parts. The Acting Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Quigley) said that the removal of the sales tax would have meant a reduction in revenue, which would have had to be found from elsewhere. The Government had made a number of adjustments to rates of duty on motor-ve-hicle parts since the commission reported to Parliament in December, 1977.
The rate for most parts had been reduced from 55 per cent under the normal tariff and 20 per cent under the preferential tariff to 40 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.
