Arrests after theft, arson

Christchurch detectives yesterday arrested five men after a big burglary and a case of arson in the city. Four of the men were charged in connection with the theft of a safe containing $l7OO in cash and cheques from the Town Hall restaurant early on Monday morning. They will apear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning charged with burglary. A small amount of the stolen money had been recovered, said a C. 1.8. spokesman. A goods barrow was

used to carry off the heavy safe, which has not been found. The fifth arrested man was charged with arson ■ after fire badly damaged a St Albans dairy early on Sunday morning. Fire-safety officers later established that the fire, which caused damage estimated at $4OOO, had been set in three places. The man arrested will also appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.
