‘Busless morning’ for Chch today

The streets of inner Christchurch are likely to be congested this morning as shoppers and school holiday visitors try to overcome a shut-down of the city’s bus services while bus drivers hold a stop-work meeting. A Ministry of Transport spokesman said that traffic officers would watch traffic flow closely. No extra officers would be on duty, but the Ministry would •“play it by ear.”

The drivers who are members of the Christchurch branch of the Tramway Workers’ Union, will start withdrawing the buses from service about 9 a.m. in readiness for the meeting which will begin at 10 a.m. The meeting, which is the. first general meeting of the; branch for more than 18 months, is expected to finish about midday and services Will resume soon afterwards. Midland coaches will run as usual, because their drivers are members of the Drivers’ Union.
