S.I. home for Flyer

PA Rotorua A commitment has been made that the ■ Kingston Flyer, which has run between Kingston' and ' Lumsden for many years, will stay in the South Island. The Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) could not be reached yesterday for comment, but his press officer said the Flyer’s historical link was with, the South and its removal would not be well received. A report yesterday, indicated that the Mayor of Rotorua (Mr J. E. Keaney) and the Mayor of Putaruru (Mr J. D. Howland) were investigating the feasibility of running the train between the two towns. They saw the 51km scenic journey over the Mamaku Ranges as having great potential. The Government has said the Kingston Flyer will be taken off the Kingston-Lum-sden run because of the high maintenance costs of keeping the line open for use only by the Flyer.
