Prime sheep

After the big lamb sale the market for prime sheep held up well, values generally being on par with late rates and some good sales being made. Good cutting sheep met a particularly sound market but some sheep tended to be on the overfat side and thus did not sell so well. In the main, demand was good for old ewes, particularly for those of good quality, the market being fully firm to slightly dearer. Older wethers also sold well, sheep with good skins bringing to about $lB. Younger ewes and wethers also met a very steady sale. But with the size of the selection of lambs and sheep and some reduction in the extent of competition towards the close, the market looked to slacken a little at that time. Values were: Best young wethers, $l9 to $20.60. Medium voung wethers, $16.50 to $lB.BO. Best older wethers, $16.50 to $lB. Other older wethers, $l3 to $l6. Best younger ewes, $lB to $19.60. Best older ewes, $15.10 to $16.60. Medium older ewes, $l4 to $l5. Sales of prime sheep included:— Wethers (two-tooth unless otherwise stated). — Estate of A. Store sheep For the first time for many weeks the store sheep sale was held on the same day as prime stock, marking the end of the main storestock selling season. The yarding was down to 2640 from 9569 last week; it included 1868 store lambs, 221 two-tooth ewes, and 551 older ewes and wethers. The lamb offering was a typical end-of-season one and for wether lambs values tended to be slightly easier. But ewe lambs had a relatively good sale, prices being on a par with late rates. The best of the ewe lambs made to $l9 for Coopworths, and Corriedales sold to $l5. A handful of black wether lambs brought $lB, some Romney cross realised from $13.10 to $l4, and Down cross sold to $l5. Among sales were:— Wether lambs.—D. Biddington (Camerons), 42 Romney cross at $13.20 to $l4, 42 Down cross at $l5; Mrs M. E. Birdling (Birdlings Flat), three black at $lB. Ewe lambs.—Mendip Hills Station (Parnassus), 445 Corriedales at $14.30 to $l5. Among only a handful of two-tooth ewes, Coopworths made from $16.20 to $18.60. Two-tooth ewes sales included:—D. S. A. Bates (Whitecliffs), 150 Coopworths at $16.20 to $18.60. In the adult section numbers forward were also very small but for both ewes and wethers the market seemed to be slightly easier. Mated Romneys brought $18.60 and a few black ewes in demand for their wool for spinning and weaving brought from $26.50 to $34, and some wethers sold at $16.20. Sales of older ewes and wethers included:—Mrs M. E. Birdling (Birdlings Flat), three black wethers at $16.20, six black ewes at $26.50 to $34; L. C. Waghom (Eastern Bays), 95 mated Romney ewes at $18.60. Prime cattle

For the second week the sale of prime cattle was very large. The entry this week was 897, compared with 870 a week ago. Quality was fairly mixed, including quite a lot of unfinished cattle being quit by producers because of the onset of winter.

While quality cattle still continued to sell well, values were easier over all about $5 a head; plainer and rough cattle of store type made only store values. Values were:

The dairy cattle sale was a big one, including 21 cattle which represented the complete dispersal of the herd of G. A. and L. A. Combe, of Summerhill. The total tally was 29 head compared with 12 last week. The Summerhill cattle were Friesians due to calve for their second to sixth time to a Shorthorn bull in the spring: thev brought from $264 to $355. The other cattle in the entry made to $414 for a second-calving grade Friesian cow. A three-year-old Friesian heifer in calf was sold for $312. Another heifer of the same breed in milk was knocked down for $3OB, and three Friesian heifers from Mid-Canterbury, which had been running with a Murray Grey bull, realised from $250 to $3OO. Another in calf to a pedigree bull made $294 and still another, which had calved only six days previously, sold for $254. Vealers

The veal entry totalled about 50 head. For cattle of reasonable quality there was a reasonable inquiry from the trade, but butchers were not much interested in store type cattle and these were sold as stores. Among the better class cattle four Angus cross heifers made $228 each. At the other end of the scale cattle sold down to about $125. Fat pigs There was another medium size yarding of fat pigs of very mixed quality, a large proportion of the selection tending to be overfat. Good quality pigs again sold very well, but there was a definite discount for anything that tended to be overfat. Another large yarding of choppers sold at last week’s very good rates.

Values were: Light porkers, $52 to $56. Medium and heavy porkers, $56 to $65. Light and medium baconers, $66 to $7B. Heavy baconers, $79 to $95,

with odd sales to $lOB. Choppers, light, $75 to $9O. Choppers, good, $9O to $lOO.

A much larger yarding of store pigs consisted mainly of good quality slips and weaners, and included only the odd line of large stores. The market remained firm on last week, although in places it tended to be slightly easier, especially in the middle of the sale. Inquiry was solely local. A sow with a litter of nine sold at $l7O. Values were: Small weaners, $2O to $25. Good weaners, $26 to $32. Slins and small stores, $33 to $4O. Large stores, $4O to $46.50, with odd sales to $52. Policeman shot Northern Ireland gunmen have killed a former parttime policeman bringing to 15 the total of political murders in the province since Britain’s Election campaign began five weeks ago. The police said that two men shot the victim in the legs and stomach from close range as he was closing the gates of Argory House, a stately home near Moy, County Tyrone. — Belfast.
