Wellington’s mayor supports casino for harbour island
PA Wellington The Mayor erf Wellington (Mr E. M. C. Fowler) wants a gambling casino on Somes Island in Wellington Harbour, to finance regional amenities. The owners of the : Wrest Point casino in Tasmania had approached him < four months ago. said Mr i Fowler. “Somes Island would be just the place. It would be < splendid for a pleasant hotel with casino facilities.” 1 The Department of ( Internal Affairs would
soon be asked to consider the proposal. Somes Island is a Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries quarantine station, but Mr Fowler said it was being used only minimally for this purpose, and he was excited at the possibility of a gambling casino for the region. Casino profits couid be used for amenities throughout the Wellington area, he said. But a gambling casino on Somes Island would be "a total social disastet" said the Mayor of Lower Hutt, (Mr J. KennedyGood). “It is fine if you have
very wealthy people,” he said. "But I think most of us in New Zealand are workers, who do not have a great deal of spare cash.” Somes Island was under the planning jurisdiction of Lower Hutt and Mr Kennedy-Good said Mr Fowler had net er discussed his casino plan with him. “1 am not against gambling, but we have adequate outlets for it in New Zealand,” he said. “The T.A.B. runs a very good system and there are the lotteries."
