Class 3 will race for Mayor’s Cup

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

The Mayor’s Cup was formerly a classic race for puppies on the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s programme, but with the deletion of puppy races, the trophy has been allocated to class 3 dogs, which will race for the cup at the totalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow evening.

Judging by the performances of Baron Snoopy and Rimu Lass in the heats on Monday evening, they should dominate the betting. They had the fastest times and both won impressively. Baron Snoopy has been a model of consistency. The Red Baron-Smooth Flight dog has won three of his last six starts and has been placed in his other three outings. He was narrowly beaten by Cuddly Princess over 54t)m — the distance of tomorrow’s race — at his last totalisator run. Ray Plusa has the fawn dog in fine fettle and he might well lead throughout from box three. Rimu Lass was a most impressive last-start winner and the Red Baron-The Huntress brindle bitch had to endure three re-runs before she won her heat very easily on Monday. Vai Bean has her team in good order at present and box seven should help Rimu Lass to miss crowding problems at the first bend. With a favourable draw (box one) Doone Spartan should be prominent most of the journey. He finished a somewhat distant second to Rimu Lass in his heat, but had earlier led the field down the home straight before catching the hare short of the line, which necessitated a re-run. Lord Butch, which will be attempting his third successive win, showed dogged qualities in wearing down Hawkesmore Sara in his heat. He is badly drawn in box five, but has the ability to overcome that disadvantage. One of the highlights of the evening should be the Guthrey Stakes for class 8 and 9 longtails. There are

only six runners, but it includes some of the best chasers in New Zealand. Lisa Havoc, winner of the Tanqueray Laurels at the last meeting, and Ariki Sue, a clear winner of the class 8 and 9 event at the same meeting, clash with Keytoe Ben, the New Zealand Breeders’ Stakes champion, and Arithmetic, the New Zealand Derby winner. They are four brilliant greyhounds and their meeting over 540 m should prove a great spectacle with a track record a distinct possibility. Fields:— 7 p.m.— PARK STAKES $150; C 4; 540ns.
