Coast artist dies

Greymouth reporter An artist whose scenes of the West Coast are found on the walls of countless homes throughout the region and the rest of New Zealand, Mr James Francis (Dusty) Rhodes has died at Greymouth, aged 87. He was born in Christchurch. His sketches in the trenches during World War One aroused the interest of others sufficient to persuade him to take an arts course at the University of Canterbury. He was a hairdresser by trade, and continued that work when he moved to the West Coast. But he then became better known as an artist, specialising in scenes of the area. Mr Rhodes was known to a recent generation as a Father Christmas in a Greymouth store. For many years, he was responsible for the backdrops for productions of the Greymouth Operatic Society.

A member of the Greymouth R.S.A., and until recently, of the Greymouth Savage Club, Mr Rhodes is survived by a son and three daughters.
