Man put in cell, forgotten

NZPA-Reuter Hoechst (Austria) A young Austrian is seriously ill in hospital after being locked and left forgotten in a police cell for 18 days. A police spokesman said they discovered Andreas Mihavecs, aged 18, when they traced a terrible smell in the council offices to his underground cell. The spokesman said Mr Mihavecs had lost about 24kg in weight during his ordeal. His condition was serious but not critical. Mr Mihavecs was arrested on April 1 after a traffic accident. He was locked in the cell under the council building while a friend in whose car he was travelling was questioned at the police station next door.

“The companion was let off and everybody forgot that a second man was in a cell in another building,” the spokesman said.

The Austrian Interior Ministry has begun an investigation into the incident.
