A piece of cake
One of New Zealand’s more innovative convention managers is
Mount Cook Airline’s David Sparks. He opened the company’s new convention section in mid 1977 with a gimmick — in the form of a tastily cooked Irish fruit cake.
David advertised that organising a convention was a piece of cake and to prove it he gave a cake to every’ serious enquiry he received — including orders from Australia and Singapore. Today his section is a major producer of convention traffic for Mount Cook Airlines and Mount Cook Landlines.
International conventions that have been persuaded to hold their meetings in New Zealand have earned the country, much overseas currency.
Queenstown is proving to be the most popular venue, mainly because of the excellent facilities and accommodation available combined with scenery and places to see. Other popular areas are the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Wai* raki, Mount Cook and Ta Anau.
According to David Sparks, the Mount Cook organisation is well placed to handle large conventions. And with their own aircraft and coaches they are able to offer a complete service.
