Early poll likely in Italy after Cabinet collapse

NZPA-Reuter Romt Italy yesterday locked set for an early General Election because of the collapse of Mr Giulio Andreotti’s fifth Government on Saturday. The fall of the fortyfirst post-Fascist Cabinet, which lasted only 10 days, was the climax to two months of political haggling caused by Communist demands for Cabinet posts in a Government of national unity. The defeat came when Mr Andreotti’s coalition of Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, and Republicans lost a vote of confidence in the Senate (Upper House) by one vote.

The Government was brought down by the combined votes of the Communists and Socialists. The Christian Democratic Prime Minister promptly handed in his resignation to President Sandro Pertini, who then asked to see the Speakers of the two Houses of Parliament today. Political observers said the fact that Mr Pertini did not invite any other politician for consultations indicated that he would dissolve Parliament and call for an early General Election, originally not due until 1981.
