China backing offer to Thais

NZPA-Reuter Bangkok! China is ready to guaran-l tee Thailand’s security in the event of Vietnamese aggression, Peking’s envoy in Bangkok Mr Chang Wei Lieh, has told the “Bangkok Post” editor, Mr Theh Chongkhadikij, in an exclusive interview. It is the fist time China has undertaken such a commitment with a liberal country in the region, although it is the second time within a month that Peking has chosen the press of Thailand to give its official view, diplomatic observers note.

It was to a group of Thai journalists visiting Peking in late 1978 that China’s VicePremier (Mr Deng Xiaoping) disclosed the possibility of a "lesson” being handed out to i Vietnam, observers recall. Ambassador Chang told the editor that if the Vietnamese “hegemonists” attacked Thailand, the Chinese people would be at the side of the Thai people and would help them in their struggle against the foreign aggressor. The envoy promised Peking’s aid to all coutries threatened with aggression.
