Big effort to clear road
' About 100 men and at least 50 machines uere engaged in clearing about 30km of State highway I north of Kaikoura on Saturday morning. Huge slips and washouts all along the road had been caused by the heavy rain in the area at the end of last week. One of the first travellers to get through after the debris was cleared about midday on Saturday said that he had never seen such a "fantastic amount” of machinery in one place. The Ministry of Works and Development, plus contracting firms from Kai-
koura and Blenheim, were • busy on the clearing work. Three motor scrapers, and at least a dozen bulldozers, a jdozen front-end loaders and 20 or 30 trucks worked at i the site. The Automobile Association (Canterbury’) said iyesterday that traffic was still being slowed by about half an hour between ConJway and Kekerengu yesterday" and that extreme care was needed on the road because of slips. The last of the three slips I which blocked the Christ-church-Picton railway line (between Rakautaura and iWharenui) was cleared before midday yesterday.
