Records tumble in S.I. inter-school athletics

Records tumbled with almost monotonous regularity in the tour th South Island secondary schools’ track and field championships, held in cold con* ditions at Queen Elizabeth U Park on Saturday. r,m tell u th ‘ final relay had be en run. 31 records had been broken, another two had been equalled, and three best per* lormances had been achieved in new events. As well, four perlormances which exceeded recorda " ei i e . fallowed because of wind assistance. The overall standard was pleasingly high, in spite of the het ak nr CO ? di, i Ons - and the “umber of closely contested events augurs well for the future of the sport in the South Island of evcnts held and numbers of athletes competing held t, .' ■ trusts. Bonniface was a narrowwinner when the two last met in the Christchurch interschool championships a week earlier. The records In the middle distances took an unexpected pounding. M. O’Caln (Burnside) lowered the under 14 boys’ 800 m record to 2min 12.5 sec; M. Metzger (Kaikoura) set a new time of Imin 59.75ec in the intermediate boys’ grade over the same distance; J. Ballisat (Burnside) won the junior (under 14) girls’ 800 m in a record 2mln 23.8 sec (in addition to winning the 400 m i; and R. Allison (North Southland) broke the intermediate (under 151) girls’ 800 m record in 2min IS.lsec. Four new records were set over 1500 m, as well. L. McDonald (St Kevin's) won the intermediate boys’ title in 4min B.2sec; V. Williams (Papanui) the junior girls’ event in smln lO.Bsec; J. Malcolm (Kaikorai Valley! the intermediate girls’ race in 4min Slsec; and SI. Moran (Pleasant Point) the senior girls’ title in 4min 52sec. G. Landery (Hlllmorton), an outstanding performer at the Christchurch inter-school meeting a week earlier, again dominated the high and long jump events in the intermediate grade. His winning leap of 1.94 m was not only better than that achieved in the senior championship but also broke the intermediate and senior records by substantial margins. His winning effort of 6.25 m in the intermediate long jump was also a good one. However, top honours in intermediate long jump went to W. Stuart (Greymouth), who cleared 6.69 m in the senior boys’ contest to equal the record. V. Lewis (Hornby), one of New Zealand's most promising rising sprint stars, cut more than a fifth of a second off the Intermediate girls’ 100 m record with her winning time of 11.395ec. She also won tlie 200 m in the grade by a very comfortable margin. K. Mohammed (Christ’s College) avenged his defeat over 400 m hurdles in the Christchurch inter-school meeting bv winning the Island senior boys’ title in 58.265ec. R. Watt (Aranui), who is still young enough to compete In intermediate ranks, this time had to settle for second. There was a surprise in the senior boys’ 110 m hurdles. 11. Lilly (Christchurch Boys’), third in the Christchurch championship, cam e through to win in 15.365ec. Mohammed was second, and the Christchurch champion, J. Dettmer (Riccarton) third. Although his runs were outside record times, the outstanding middle distance performer in senior boys’ ranks was G. Jackson (Timaru Boys’). He and B. Smith (Southland Boys’) engaged in an enthralling tussle in both the 800 and 15O0m races but on each occasion it was Jackson who was ahead. His winning time in the 1500 m was a worthy 4min 3.9 sec. One of the most convincing winners of the day was J. Stapleton-Smith (Christ’s College) in the senior boys’ javelin. His winning throw of 61.26 m was nearly 7m greater than the record.
