Karen’s winning ways
Win with Karen Coleman has been the theme to emerge from the first two days of the Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting. She rode three winners before her home crowd on Saturday, and one winner on the first day. A bei of $1 each way on each of her mounts would have produced a profit of $53.20. One of her three winners on Saturday was Toiato, which paid $34.20 for a win when she narrowly beat the favourite, Father Lou in the Wakatu Handicap. Her other winners were Poto Tahi and Arrjon, which were also racing on their home course. After the Wakatu Handicap, the connections of Father Lou lodged a protest. It was alleged that interference had taken place about the 250 m when Coleman, it was claimed, had struck the head of Father Lou with the whip. The judicial committee could not find sufficient evidence to support the objection and allowed the piacings to stand. But after considering a second protest following the same race it promoted Santa to third, relegated Cremedo to fourth, and found Cremedo’s rider, Angela Mclvor, guilty of careless riding. Mclvor was suspended from race riding up to and including April 2— in effect one race day.
