Draught mare for $4500

PA Timaru An eight-year-old Clydesdale draught mare was sold yesterday for $4500, thought to be a record price for a Clydesdale in the Southern Hemisphere. Strathaven Bonnie Maxine was bought at the Strathaven Clydesdale Stud dispersal sale, near Fairlie, by Donald Reid Otago Farmers, on account of Mr A. Lee.

Other mares sold ranged from $2OOO to $2900: working geldings made from $5OO to $l7OO. An unregistered mare sold for $1550, and registered colts fetched from $5OO to $llOO.

There was a complete clearance of stock from the property which- had been the biggest Clydesdale stud in New Zealand. The owner, Mr A. R. Barwell, has decided to sell up and move to the Christchurch area for health reasons.

Bidding was keen throughout the sale and there was a strong demand for harness, but implements did not attract similar interest.

The 30.6 ha property (Government valuation, 1975, $21,000) was passed in at $42,500 and later sold by private treaty for an undisclosed figure.
