Resurrection of play centre
Residents and businesses n Hornby have co-operated to provide a new play centre for their area, after the original centre was destroyed by fire last November. The Hornby play centre lost its home and much of its equipment in a fire at St Columba’s Church and the adjoining hall. A temporarycentre was opened this week at the scout den on the east side of Denton Park. The fire helped rekindle community spirit to re-es-tablish the play centre, according to a spokesman. Material for a fence at the scout den was provided by local firms, and parents repaired smoke damaged
equipment. Much of that destroyed has been replaced with the aid of insurance money and gifts from other play centres. Forty-five children, aged between three and four, will now be able to attend play centre two mornings a week Organisers hope that next month, with two qualified supervisors, one assistant and parents, each child will be able to have three sessions a week.
The spokesman said there were several options open for a permanent play centre. However this would entail much hard work and fundraising during the next few months.
