Iran Govt faces new uprising
NZPA-Reuter Teheran Heavy fighting raged in the streets of the north Iranian town of Gonbad Kavus yesterday between troops and Islamic revolutionary guards on the one side and local Turkoman tribesmen seeking greater self-rule. Townspeople stranded in their homes by gunfire said by telephone that scores of people had been killed and many more wounded since the fighting had broken out on Monday. Communications with the town were disrupted and it was difficult to get more details from the capital. One local teacher, who said hospitals had told him of at least 80 killed and 140 wounded, said local hospitals were full and that casualties were now being taken to the town of Gorgan, 60km away.
