Trudeau calls early poll

NZPA-Reuter Ottawa Canada’s Parliament has been dissolved and a General Election was announced for May 22. The Speaker of the House of Commons (Mr Allan MacEachen) made the announcement as the Prime Minister (Mr Pierre Trudeau) was at Government House requesting the dissolution of Parliament by the GovernorGeneral (Mr Edward Schreyer). The Commons was winding up a debate on Government spending plans when it was dissolved. The 57-day election campaign was expected to start later in the week. The election will be held four months before the fiveyear mandate of the present 264-member Parliament expires. Mr Trudeau’s Liberal Party won a General Election in 1974, taking 141 seats in the House of Commons compared to 95 for Progressive Conservatives, 16 for the New Democratic Party and 11 for the Social Credit Party. One seat went to an Independent. But since then a variety of domestic problems have pushed the Prime Minister’s rating in public opinion polls steadily downwards. The Liberal Party has held power for 16 years, winning the last five elections.-
