Printing talks fail
PA Welington The printers’ dispute that has held up publication of most national magazines, including the “Listener,” is no closer to settlement after a compulsory conference broke up yesterday without agreement.
The printers, who ended a two-week strike to attend the conference, called by the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger), will hold stop-work meetings this week to discuss their next move.
The conference was attended by the Printers’ Union, which seeks a $6-a-week industry allowance for handling new technology, and the employers, the Printing Industries Federation. The federation’s executive director (Mr J. Cook) said last evening that nd progress had been made, and the union’s national president (Mr W. Clement) accused the employers of making no effort to reach a settlement as they were asked by Mr Bolger.
