Council says no to bikie gang gathering
PA Nelson The Nelson City Council does not want a planned motor-cycle gang convention in Nelson at Easter to take place. At a meeting last evening the council unanimously declined requests from at least four bikie gangs for the use of a public reserve at Easter, a move which earned applause from the public gallery. The Mayor (Mr R. A.
McLennan) was authorised to call a public meeting later this week to find if the council’s views are endorsed by citizens. During the short debate last evening, bikies were called “louts,” “larrikins” and “liars” who failed to maintain the normal standards of society and had to be discriminated against. A citizen’s group, which met on Monday evening, was “deeply disturbed” at the prospect of a bikie convention in the city at Easter.
