Women’s bowls ends in flourish

With four finals to be played, the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre will wrap up its season with a flourish at St Martins today. Most interest for a start will centre on the first-year players’ championship, which has two entrants remaining — Gwen Carter (Fendalton Women’s) and Ora Bate (Kaiapoi). Mrs Carter still holds two lives, while Mrs Bate, a prominent Canterbury indoor bowler, must beat, her twice to take the title.

There will be special interest in Mrs Carter, for if she is successful she will complete a remarkable family triple. Her husband, Frank Carter, won the Christchurch men’s cham-pion-of-champions singles title this year and their 15-year-old son, Chris, won the men’s colts championship. Mrs Carter played very well yesterday, as she had to to beat B. Immers (Papanui), 18-16, on an extra end and then A. Wise (Hornby), 21=15. Mrs Bate earned her place in the final when she gave a most impressive display to overwhelm the other last one-lifer, Peg Woodfield (Linwood), 21-6. The first-year players’ final, or semi-final depending on the result,, will begin at 9 a.m. as also will the

semi-finals of the champion? of-champions triples. In one semi-final, Lex Kimber (Linwood), who has already won the pairs championship this season, will meet Branda Dailey (Cashmere) and Beryl Logan (Shaw Avenue) will play Alice MacFarlane (Burwood). In the quarter-finals yesterday, Mrs Kimber beat Daphne Young (Papanui), 20-12, Mrs Dailey beat Agnes Anderson (St Martins), 24-20, Mrs MacFarlane got home in the tightest finish, 20-18, against Elsie Brown (Spreydon) and Mrs Logan accounted for Nancy Hawes (Beckenham), 22-10. While it might not have pleased her and her team, Mrs Brown’s loss was a relief for the organisers, who are now able to continue the champion - of - champions fours, which was interrupted part way through the semi? finals by last week's rain. These semi-finals will resume at 10 a.m. with Mrs Brown playing Lorraine Carson (Woblston) and Rita Hobbs (St Martins) confronting Alice Sinclair (Woolston W.M.C.). Also beginning at 10 a.m. will be a semi-final of the inter-club championship, another victim of last week’s rain. The semi-final is between Morrison Avenue and Christchurch-Richmond, with the winner going on to play Linwood in the final.
