A Charolais Friesian-cross' steer (photograph at left) has been judged the best beast on the hoof in the Canterbury Agricultural and' Pastoral Associations beef and beef cuts competition. The winning beast was entered by B. T. Fisher, of Greenpark. The 59 cattle entered in the competition were judged on the hoof at the Islington i works of Waitaki-N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, yesterday. Second placing went to a . Simmental-cross from the : Levels Farming Company, Ltd. of Timaru: and D. P. . Graham and Sons, of Tai i Tapu, exhibited the third- < placed steer, a Maine Anjou cross, | The remaining three placing were filled by West : Coast cattle. G. W. and A. I. ; Smith (Totara Flat) filled;, fourth and fifth placings i with Angus Shorthorn-cross ! i and Angus steers respec-; tively and Holestanes Farm. Ltd, also of Totara Flat, had an Angus Hereford-cross! I that took sixth place. The judge, Mr J. H. R. I Jamison, of the Canterbury:] Frozen Meat Company, said:] that some very good light!; cattle were included in the!; selection, but under the ;present judging system, with!' [which he disagreed, he was' not able to place these. li
The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association has been advised by >rhe Meat Board, which sets the conditions for the com- . petition, that for the rest of the season the rules will be [amended to eliminate the i weight limit on cattle entered for class. I in the ■ hooks and cuts part of the' 'competition. The board said that the ■ weight limit had resulted in' a number of very good carcases from cattle of 18 to 20i months of age being dis-; 'qualified because they ex- [ ceeded 300 kg. The exclusion of these conflicted directly (with the aims of the com-; petition. The board also said thatj. the recommendation that an; [.age restriction should be! ! placed on entrants in this 1 class, limiting them to'24; months, had been deleted. ; The assistant secretary-; I manager of the association; ’(Mr N. M. Woods) said that! ’because the schedules for; this year’s competition had[ been sent out and entries; had closed before the change! had been notified, it was not; possible to take it into; [account in the judging of: this week’s contest, which! would be continued with; ijudging on the hooks and ini Icuts.
