Bursary protest march planned
PA Wellington Wellington students will march on Parliament to press claims for an increase to the Standard Tertiary Bursary. The Education Department had recognised the validity of the students’ claims by recommending a $9 increase for 1980, according to Mr G. Adams. the Education Officer of the Victoria University Students’ Association. The unabated bursary for students is $3O and the abated $l9.
“Students feel that the Government has not faced the very real problems experienced by students because of madequate funding,” said Mr Adams. “Because of inadequate or poorly paid holiday employment, students cannot save the necessary amount to subsidise their allowance. With the dramatic increase in basic food items, power and rent, many students will either have to depend on their parents this year or drop out,” he said.
