Drop in birth rate

, Sir, — If Mrs Wilkinson (March 26) selects Ireland as a gruesome illustration of her naive socio-demographic theories, she must accept the hard facts, namely: (1) Ireland’s emigration rate is the lowest for centuries — far below New Zealand’s; (2) its population is not static, but increasing by over one per cent annually; (3) its economic growth rate is the fastest in Western Europe; (4) its living standards are expected to outstrip those of Britain (insofar as such things can be quantified) within a short time, and no doubt, New Zealand’s too. The question of assigning blame for past and present miseries is best answered by examining realities; in this case the realities clearly deprive Mrs Wilkinson of her favourite scapegoat. — Yours, etc., S. O. MAHONY. March 26, 1979.
