Plains Indians

Between the Andes Mountains and the West Coast of South America is a plain which stretches for almost the length of the continent, and which forms the lowland areas of Ecuador. Peru and Chile. This narrow coastal plain ascends sharply to the tropical forests, plateaux and high mountain peaks of the Andes Range. These States, in common with the rest of

South America, were inhabited by tribes of Indians until the sixteenth century, when Peru and part of Chile were occupied by soldiers of the invading Spanish Armies. The legends of Ecuador, Peru and Chile are Indian in origin, with perhaps some Spanish influence through the presence of priests and soldiers who may have taken some part in the writing of them.
