Strike by drivers
PA Wellington More than 100 lorry drivers yesterday began a seven-day national strike for an extra week’s leave. The men stopped work because of lack of progress in their dispute, in spite of an earlier four-day stoppage from March 12. The drivers’ award does not class them as shift workers, but they argue that as they spend days away
from their homes and often travel late at night or early in the morning, their “unsocial” hours qualify them for a fourth week’s annual leave.
Most of the drivers work for three companies, Refrigerated Freightlines, Modern Freight and Road Air. A spokesman for the employers said an offer of an extra day’s leave for every 25 nights away from home had been rejected.
