Minister also to visit Japan, Korea
FA Auckland New Zealand interest in China, Japan, and Korea must be political as well as economic, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Trade (Mr Tai boys). Speaking at the annual dinner of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Mr Taiboys said: ‘ This is precisely why when I visit China in May I intend also to go to Japan and the Republic of Korea ” Mr Taiboys said that in each of the three capitals he would discuss the situation in Indo-China and its implications for other countries in Asia and the Pacific. There could be no stability in the region until the independence of Kampuchea (formerly Cambodia) was assured and Kampuchea was prepared to co-operate with its neighbours. Referring to the other aim of exploring trade opportunities, Mr Taiboys emphasised that the visit would be “a working mission.’’ Mr Taiboys, who will be accompanied by a group of top New Zealand businessmen, said the Chinese had asked whether New Zealand interests could help in developing tourist facilities.
Later, he said that other fields in which New Zealand might make a contribution included the livestock and pastoral industries. Referring to the visit to New Zealand of German industrialists, Mr Taiboys said that the part played by foreign investment in East Asian countries could be a lesson for New Zealand "because it sometimes appears, that the whole subject of foreign investment is much maligned in the New Zealand public mind.’’ “The right sort of level of foreign investment" could be of great assistance to New Zealand. That was why the Government welcomed the German mission. Foreign investment could help in resolving New Zealand’s economic difficulties without in any way threatening the nation’s sovereignty or control of resources. Later, Mr Taiboys indicated that there were wavs around the present New Zealand regulatory barriers an foreign investment and that he was suggesting legislative changes to open up the chances of foreign capital being enlarged.
