‘Don’t blame us'
The poor price paid by Japanese customers of Nelson Pine Forests, Ltd’s woodchipping mill at Nelson was the real reason the mill might close, said Ms Gwenny Davis the national president of the Native Forests Action Council. The price paid by the Japanese was lower now than when the last threeyear contract was negotiated in 1977, said Ms Davis. In a statement on the possible closing, the company had said that increased costs and environmentalists were the reason for the problems, she said. But the company had not made money since its Opening in 1968 and was yet to pay either, dividends or taxes, said Ms Davis. Environmentalists had never had much luck in opposing logging by the company, she said. The catchment board in that area had never blocked any of the company’s logging applications because of action by environmentalists.
