Abolition of bursaries

Sir, —- I would like to thank Stella Clark (March 23) for summarising so well the financial dilemma facing university students. Unfortunately the situation is actually worse than Ms Clark would have us believe. First, $29 is not an accurate standard to use as most students get less than this and must therefore be worse off. Second, the relief scheme and vacation employment do help many students make it through the year but there are insufficient positions available for every student in the country. Ms Clark claims that New Zealand students are better off than those in other countries but lack of finance can still restrict the entry of New Zealand citizens into our universities. Finally, a person should “owe a debt to society” when he has done wrong by that society, not because he sought an education which is a democratic right. Unfortunately, this democratic right can be undermined by inadequate bursaries. — Yours, etc., PETER WERDER. March 23, 1979.
