Art works for N.Z.

An Auckland art dealer, 1 Mr Graham Chote, has < bought a collection of works i by the Dutch artist, Petrus van der Velden. who lived in Christchurch at the end of last century. Mr Chote is bringing the works to New Zealand for sale but the McDougall Art 1 Gallery in Christchurch will! not be buying any of them to add to its already large; van der Velden collection.

The director of the gallery (Dr T. L. R. Wilson) said that all New Zealand galleries had had a chance to buy the paintings before they had been offered for public sale. The collection included a “very interesting series" of drawings of the artist’s daughter from her birth in 1807 until the age of four “but there is nothing there that would usefu’iv expand

on our collection here. “If the collection had a self portrait, it would be a different story,” Dr Wilson said.
