Big variety of cargo due

Phosphate from two ships due on the same day is among a wide variety of cargo to be handled at Lyttelton over the next 10 days. The Kolle D will discharge 6500 tonnes of phosphate from Mauru Island and the Cape Horn, from Christmas Island, will unload 8000 tonnes.

The Shinryu Maru has been discharging 1400 tonnes of steel from Japan and the Southland Star has been at the container terminal.

Timber and machinery will be discharged from the Heroj Paic tomorrow and the ship will take on 3000 bales of wool for Europe. The Botany Triump will unload 1100 tonnes of molasses later in the week, and load 1200 tonnes of tallow. After unloading 500 tonnes of general cargo the Kyra will load for Indian ports and South-East Asia. * * *

A further move in the trend towards roll-on shipping as distinct from cellular container vessels occurred recently when Nedlloyd Lines took delivery of one of the world’s biggest roll-on vessels.

Nedlloyd ships are fequent callers at Lyttelton with many types of general cargo. The line’s latest ship is a 25,000-tonne, three-deck vessel built by Nippon Kokan KK, of Japan. The managing director of Nedlloyd Lines, of Rotterdam (Mr E. A. Postuna) said the company’s building programme was designed to meet rapidly changing shipping requirements. The Nedlloyd Rouen, the new vessel, is capable of carrying containers, trailers, rolling stock and heavy lifts of up to 400 tonnes "without using cargo-handling cranes.

Her three decks are connected by sloping ramps nine metres wide with a maximum slope of 7-5 degrees, giving a gradual incline and easy curves.

A huge eight-lane quarter stern ramp has been installed at the starboard side to allow starboard or stern berthing. Constant-ten-sion winches support the stern ramp and a list compensator keeps the ship level while loading Or discharging. The ramp is 49.5 metres long, with a maximum width of 25 metres at the stern gate opening and permissible loading of 400 tonnes. ARRIVALS Saturday Southland Star (7.13 a.m.), 7786. Auckland, Capt. W.
