‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ returns in six stories
Leo McKern stars as the barrister, Horace Rumpole, in this six-part drama series. Written by John Mortimer, a Queen's Counsel himself, “Rumpole of the Bailey” takes a satirical look at the criminal law and the workings of the Old Bailey. Throughout the series viewers are introduced to a variety of men of law, seeing the public and private faces of barristers and judges. Leo McKern was first
seen as Rumpole on Tele- I vision One in “Play For Today’’ last September. He returns tonight, as slovenly' as ever, quoting Wordsworth and calling everyone “Old i Darling.” In the opening programme, “Rumpole And The Younger Generation,” he defends a teenager, Jim Timson (Keith Jayne) accused of robbery with violence, knowing that although the boy is probably innocent on this occasion, he is destined I for a life of crime.
