Trio to face trial
NZPA Bangkok Three Australians, including a Sydney rugby league player, Paul Hayward, who were charged in Bangkok with heroin trafficking had been waived from summary punishment including the death penalty, according to a spokesman for the Australian Erm bassy in Bangkok. But the decision has drawn immediate criticism from the narcotics police.
Thai officials had ruled that the case should be decided by the criminal court, said the spokesman. The embassy had been advised that Hayward; Warren Fellows, a hairdresser; and William Sinclair, a Bangkok bar owner, would be brought before the criminal court today in connection with the seizing of 8.4 kg of heroin last October, the spokesman said.
